I was thinking for a few weeks how I should respond to this episode of the Jewish Reconnection Project. When one of the girls explained that she found tall and funny to be necessary criterias but not Judaism, I really felt like her main problem was first and foremost not understanding the incredible value of her Judaism. As I started writing my post, I found an article written on aish.com which expresses my opinion very well.

I do have one additional comment to say on the subject which addresses the solution for intermarriage rather than the definition of the problem. Of course, education is a key component to such a solution. However, I think it’s important to outline how low the intermarriage rate is in the State of Israel. I once said as a joke that the intermarriage rate was lower in clubs in Tel Aviv than in many of the yeshivot in America. Now, of course, I did not mean to suggest the solution is to all go clubbing in Tel Aviv, however, this really brings up serious questions we need to grapple with in our fight against assimilation. The recognition that our future is only in the land of Israel is a critical component of today’s fight against assimilation. Only in our own country can we truly live freely without feeling the need to ever sacrifice on our identity. As long as we are not in our country, our options are either separation from society (with all the negative impacts of such an approach) or integration (with the danger of assimilation). Only in a Jewish State can we live a complete Jewish life without sacrifice anything from our Judaism or our role in society.
